Juvenile Bryde’s Whale Stranded at Dwarswegstrand

In the early hours of October 11, 2024, SMART (Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team) responded to a call reporting a juvenile Bryde’s whale washed ashore at Dwarswegstrand. The team arrived promptly at 4:45am and found a 6.9-metre female whale still alive. Tragically, the whale passed away shortly after their arrival.

There were no visible injuries, and the cause of death is currently unknown. Samples were collected for further analysis.

Bryde’s whales (pronounced “broo-dus”) typically inhabit warmer, temperate oceans and can grow up to 16.5 metres in length. Recognizable by the three ridges on their heads, these whales feed mainly on schooling fish and small crustaceans. They are often seen closer to shore in areas where food is plentiful.

A special thanks was extended from SMART to Lourens, Hawee, and the team from Dwarswegstrand Resort for their assistance on-site, and to Mark and Cindy from Ignite Prodigal Ministries for their thoughtful prayer. SMART volunteers Val Marsh and Tersia Marais are also thanked for capturing photos and videos of the event.

If you spot any stranded marine animals, please report them to SMART at 079 227 4715.
