In the early hours of October 11, 2024, SMART (Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team) responded to a call reporting a juvenile Bryde’s whale washed ashore at Dwarswegstrand. The team arrived promptly at 4:45am and found a 6.9-metre female whale still alive. Tragically, the whale passed away shortly after their arrival.
There were no visible injuries, and the cause of death is currently unknown. Samples were collected for further analysis.
Bryde’s whales (pronounced “broo-dus”) typically inhabit warmer, temperate oceans and can grow up to 16.5 metres in length. Recognizable by the three ridges on their heads, these whales feed mainly on schooling fish and small crustaceans. They are often seen closer to shore in areas where food is plentiful.
